Better lives

Dumfries and Galloway’s Better Lives Partnership provides tailored support to all participants, with some great approaches to supporting those with dyslexia

Support Worker Shelley Gibson said: “At our service, we are going to ensure we offer a variety of different learning experiences for the young people who attend. We will ensure that they can choose between writing, using computers or having a staff member scribe for them. If a young person needs a specific colour of paper or any overlays for visual stress, we ensure we have them available. We already break our activities down into manageable instructions, but if a young person required additional breakdown, we will ensure they receive this support. There are quieter areas available so that distractions are minimised. We focus on each individual’s strengths and support them to build confidence in the tasks they struggle with. This will hopefully encourage young people with dyslexia to ask for help when required and enable them to reach their goals.”
