How to ask for support at work

A simple step-by-step guide on how to ask for reasonable adjustments at work

  1. Be specific about what support you need and why.
  2. Create a list of things you have tried that worked and other potential solutions.
  3. Think about who is the best person to ask. A colleague with specific expertise or your line manager?
  4. Choose the right time to speak to someone. Schedule a time to meet to allow them the time and headspace to listen and help.
  5. Don’t apologise for asking for support at work. It shows that you want to do your job to the best of your ability and that you trust your co-worker.
  6. Rehearse and/or make notes on what you want to say if it will help.
  7. Keep the conversation positive. Be confident and polite. Listen carefully and be open to constructive feedback.
  8. Give feedback on the effectiveness of the help you received at a suitable later date.

Asking for help at work is totally normal. It is a strength, not a weakness. It shows you are committed to your work, helps you to be more productive and fosters team spirit.
