The value of volunteering
The impact volunteers have on Dyslexia Scotland – and the impact we have had on them in the last year
At Dyslexia Scotland we are very lucky to have many people with an interest in dyslexia who are prepared to give up their time and skills to support the work that we do. It would not be an exaggeration to say that all that we do would not be possible without our volunteers.
Charities often measure the value of volunteering by the number of hours people give. But this doesn’t tell the stories of the personal impact that time has on either the organisation or the people.
“Volunteering gives you a voice to help others and that is the most rewarding work I have ever done.”

We asked volunteers about the personal benefits of being involved with Dyslexia Scotland.
- Over 90% said their confidence had increased, they felt a sense of achievement and believed they were making a difference.
- Over 80% gained new skills and experiences and felt valued.
- A third had improved their employment prospects.
“I found the confidence to launch my own company …… [this] evolved from my volunteering role.”
